Six Month Extension Now Automatic

Starting with the 2005 filing season, the automatic extension (Form 4868) will extend individual returns until October 15. No more wasted time in filing Form 2688 with the required excuses. The new 2005 Form 4868 automatically gives taxpayers the additional six months to file.

Remember that these extensions allow additional time to file your tax return. They do NOT allow any extra time to pay your taxes. Additional taxes paid with a return filed after April 15 will incur interest and penalties. So it is important to estimate the final tax due and make the payment with the Form 4868 when filed.
